Born in New York, raised in North Carolina, with over 30 years playing music in California’s Bay Area you can hear a bit of all of these places flowing through the songwriting and his singular voice.

These influences are reflected in the many different musicians Sean has played with over the years. From singing duets with Aimee Mann and Frazey Ford to touring with Charley Crockett, Jolie Holland, The Wood Brothers, Ani DeFranco and The Cold War Kids among many others. His songs have been remixed by renowned House DJ Mark Farina and have appeared on NPR, NBC and HBO. Dress it up however you like it’s just a night of good music.

“There is an easy effortlessness in Hayes’ voice…the tonality of his voice is superb and as we’ve spoken of before, Hayes is doing things nobody else is doing. He has a darkened bar type of feel to him. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of going to New Orleans you might know what I’m speaking of..” - BEST NEW BANDS

“HAYES’ VOICE SUCCEEDS ON THE TENSION BETWEEN WARM, RESONANT SOUL AND DIRT-ROAD FOLK, ALL LACED WITH A WANDERING TROUBADOUR’S COO.” - SF WEEKLY

“Maybe you recall his timeless voice paired with Aimee Mann on "Ballentines," the closing song of her album @#%&*! Smilers or mentioned frequently on NPR or adding some emotion to that car commercial. He's one of those artists who camps out on the fringes of the music world, but once your ears catch wind of his natural, rhythmic, reggae-tinged form, you wonder where he's been all your life.” - PHOENIX NEW TIMES

“SEAN HAYES' ROOTSY POP-ROCK SONGS RADIATE A SHAGGY, FREE-SPIRITED CHARM.” - NPR MUSIC

Lonesome Shack’s journey began in Alma, NM where songwriter Ben Day Todd learned folk and blues songs from old recordings and started writing songs in his home, the “Lonesome Shack”. The shack itself consisted of a small handmade shed that served as living room and kitchen connecting to a 16 ft travel trailer as the bedroom. It still stands at the edge of the Gila wilderness. Ben later moved to Seattle, WA and met longtime bandmates Kristian Garrard and Luke Bergman at Cafe Racer where they took up a weekly residency. Now the magnetic trio all live in different corners of the States but continue to meet up for recordings and performances. Ben often performs solo around Southern California where he currently resides.

On Lonesome Shack's latest release "In Montargis" the band weaves new life into a career-spanning selection of songs. The recording was made without amplification one morning in a hotel room in France while the band was on tour.

Testimonials: ... immediately brings to mind the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta with occasional flourishes of what almost sounds like Malian guitar. But it’s also anything but traditional, and that is immediately clear from the lyrics of songwriter and frontman Ben Todd. It’s the kind of stripped down, raw, expressive and danceable music that’s well suited for a dark bar.” - GLIDE MAGAZINE

“... heartbreakingly beautiful” – SECRETLY IMPORTANT

“You wait for a release that you never get. It's both frustrating and glorious. And you can somehow dance to it.” - IF IT’S TOO LOUD

“Lonesome Shack occupies a lane all its own, built on sounds that haven’t been heard, in the vein of Junior Kimbrough, or R.L. Burnside, but without pastiche or pantomime.” - AMERICAN STANDARD TIME

“One of the slickest guitar players in town.” - KEXP
